Thousands of Indonesian e-hailing gig workers staged nationwide protests on May 20, demanding better welfare and opposing a proposed merger between Indonesia’s largest tech company and a US-listed e-hailing firm.

The Indonesian Online Drivers Union (SPOI) revealed that at least 12 drivers and riders have died due to extreme overwork, including one who reportedly starved to death while waiting for a delivery order. 

Protesters highlighted the unsustainable working conditions—often up to 18 hours daily for only IDR300,000 (RM78). SPOI accused the government of neglecting gig workers’ rights for over a decade, calling for immediate regulatory intervention.
