A US judge sentenced former Goldman Sachs banker Timothy Leissner to two years in prison on May 29, 2025, for his role in the 1MDB scandal, where billions meant for Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund were misappropriated for luxury purchases. Leissner, who pleaded guilty to bribery and money laundering, faced up to 25 years but received leniency for his “extraordinary” cooperation, including testifying against colleague Roger Ng and aiding charges against fugitive financier Jho Low. Despite Goldman Sachs’ call for a harsher penalty, Leissner’s sentence is scheduled to begin in September, following his letter of regret to the court.
