The Federal Court’s rejection of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s bid to seek immunity from a civil lawsuit marks a key test of Malaysia’s judicial independence, says Bersih chairman Faisal Abdul Aziz. He called the court’s decision a “first test” for Anwar’s Unity Government, which he believes it passed. Anwar had sought to refer constitutional questions on whether a sitting Prime Minister has limited immunity from legal action over alleged misconduct before assuming office. The case stems from a civil suit by former research assistant Muhammed Yusoff Rawther. Faisal emphasized the importance of upholding judicial independence and accountability.
