New: Anwar 'protecting' public office from politically motivated litigation in Rawther's case

On June 10, 2025, the Court of Appeal in Malaysia granted an ad interim stay on a civil suit against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, accused by Yusoff Rawther of sexual assault in 2018. A three-judge panel, led by Judge Supang Lian, unanimously halted all proceedings, including the trial set for Monday, pending Anwar’s full stay application, scheduled for July 21. The decision, based on Section 44 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964, aims to preserve the integrity of Anwar’s appeal. Anwar’s counsel, Alan Wong, argued the trial could harm the prime minister, while Yusoff’s lawyer, Rafique Rashid Ali, presented counterarguments.
