Deputy Minister Fuziah Salleh cautioned that the Malaysian government could become “very unpopular” if it imposed heavier taxes on the top 10% of earners to redistribute wealth. Speaking at the BBC World Questions debate, she acknowledged the need for equitable wealth distribution but stressed the political sensitivity of such moves.

The discussion arose amid public resistance to targeted fuel subsidies and the new dividend tax. Meanwhile, concerns were raised over undefined wealth brackets like the T15 and rural-urban education gaps. 

Fuziah also addressed concerns over potential U.S. tariffs on Malaysian exports, while experts urged Malaysia to maintain neutrality amid global trade tensions.
