Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim justified the sales and service tax (SST) expansion on imported non-essential goods, targeting high-income earners. Speaking in Ipoh, he noted that items like avocados, cod fish, king crabs, salmon, and truffles, favored by the wealthy, will face a 5-10% tax from July 1. Local bananas, like pisang emas, remain untaxed. Unlike the broader GST, which taxed essentials, Anwar said SST spares necessities. The RM13 billion in tax revenue will fund civil servant salaries, social aid, and infrastructure, easing the cost-of-living burden for B40 and M40 groups.
