Malaysian authorities are intensifying efforts to silence online critics of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration, earning it the moniker “kuku besi” (iron claw) from an X user. Politicians and citizens, including a pro-Pakatan Harapan supporter, face police questioning or charges for social media posts, particularly those commenting on PKR elections. Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli raised concerns after authorities targeted X user Amer Hamzah. The clampdown aligns with privacy fears over the Mobile Phone Data project, which collects telco data without opt-out. A new Telegram channel, Edisi Siasat 2, was shut down after exposing Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil’s phone number.
