KUALA LUMPUR: Former DAP MP Charles Santiago has called on the government to prioritize wage reforms before expanding the Sales and Service Tax (SST) from July 1, 2025. Citing Bank Negara Malaysia’s deputy governor, Santiago highlighted stagnant wages despite a 17.5% price surge and 7.4% productivity rise, exacerbating cost-of-living pressures. He criticized the RM1,700 minimum wage as insufficient, urging intervention to address the “structural misalignment” favoring the wealthy. Santiago praised Sime Darby Property’s RM2,700 minimum wage for B40 workers, warning that without equitable wage growth, economic gains will widen inequality, leaving Malaysians struggling.
