In a May 22 interview at ST headquarters, Malaysian opposition leader Hamzah Zainuddin called for institutional reforms to curb the prime minister’s influence over law enforcement, criminal prosecution, and constituency funds, urging an end to oppressive political tactics. On the Perikatan Nasional (PN) prime minister candidate, he said a strategic decision would be made before the next general election, considering coalition consensus. He noted, “During the July convention, he (Muhyiddin) mentioned it clearly, he wants me to be the successor. The acceptance was so overwhelming that there was no contest at all for No. 1 and 2,” but emphasized the need for coalition-wide endorsement, citing the precedent of Umno’s Ismail Sabri Yaakob becoming prime minister in 2021.
