BEIJING – China on June 22 denounced Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te as a “separatist” for asserting Taiwan is a country with historical and legal backing, calling his speech a “heresy” and “Taiwan independence declaration.” Beijing insists Taiwan is a sacred Chinese province, rejecting Lai’s offers for talks. The Taiwan Affairs Office accused Lai of distorting history to incite confrontation, predicting his claims will be “swept into the rubbish heap of history.” Lai maintains Taiwan’s future lies with its people, arguing China, never having ruled the island, has no claim over it.
