Thailand is set to recriminalise cannabis, reversing its 2022 decriminalisation and throwing the country’s US$1 billion cannabis industry into uncertainty. The Health Ministry announced new rules banning recreational use and requiring prescriptions for purchases, to be enforced once published in the Royal Gazette.

The move follows political fallout from a border dispute with Cambodia, prompting the pro-cannabis Bhumjaithai Party to exit the ruling coalition. 

While the government claims the shift is to protect youth and restore cannabis’s medical-use focus, industry players express shock over their now-jeopardised investments. Critics argue the industry is now a victim of unstable political agendas.
