PUTRAJAYA, June 26, 2025 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced today that apples and oranges will be exempt from the sales and services tax, reversing his earlier stance after public backlash. Initially, Anwar claimed the tax expansion on imported fruits would only affect affluent consumers eating avocados. Acknowledging complaints from the B40 group, he exempted apples and oranges, citing their affordability. However, other imported fruits, like avocados, will still face a small tax. Anwar also debunked the notion that “an apple a day” is healthiest, advocating for bananas due to their potassium content, during a speech in Putrajaya.
