Global childhood vaccination efforts are regressing due to pandemic disruptions, economic inequality, conflict, and misinformation, according to a new Lancet study. Though vaccines have saved 154 million lives since 1974, gains have slowed, with measles immunisation declining in half of all countries.
Millions of Children at Risk as Immunisation Progress Stalls
The COVID-19 pandemic left nearly 13 million children completely unvaccinated between 2020–2023. Most of the 15.7 million unvaccinated children in 2023 were concentrated in eight countries, largely in sub-Saharan Africa.
Rising outbreaks of measles and polio signal growing threats. Experts warn that without urgent funding and political will, global vaccination goals for 2030 may fall dangerously short.
