A newlywed couple in Singapore was devastated when thief Lee Yi Wei stole nearly S$50,000 in red envelopes from their wedding reception. Lee, a former hotel waiter familiar with the venue, snatched two unattended boxes containing the cash gifts, a common tradition in Asian weddings. He gambled away S$12,200 in four hours and spent the rest on clothes and online betting. Arrested days later, police recovered only S$3,000. On Tuesday, Lee was sentenced to a year in prison and ordered to repay the couple, facing an extra 100 days if he fails. The incident highlights the cultural significance of red envelope gifts.
