Former DAP MP Charles Santiago called for taxing Malaysia’s ultra-rich to reform the nation’s tax system, criticizing the government for burdening the poor with levies. Responding to Treasury secretary-general Johan Mahmood Merican’s remark that Malaysia’s tax-to-GDP ratio is low at 12.5%, Santiago advocated for progressive taxes, including an inheritance tax and measures against unexplained wealth to curb corruption. He accused the wealthy of dodging taxes while benefiting from public amenities. Santiago also criticized corporate tax breaks and illicit financial flows, which force the government to borrow repeatedly. A new sales tax expansion is set for July 1.
