Surge in In-Flight Thefts Targets Malaysia Flights, Singapore Cracks Down

A rise in in-flight thefts across Asia, notably in Hong Kong and Malaysia, has been linked to organized crime syndicates targeting short-transit flights, including those to Singapore. Malaysia reported 146 cases from January to May 2025, up from 88 in 2023. Singapore’s Airport Police Division, led by Assistant Commissioner M Malathi, noted thieves operate in pairs, stealing small items like cash or cards to avoid detection. Three individuals were charged in Singapore in 2025, compared to one in 2024. Using data analytics and patrol robots, authorities aim to curb these opportunistic crimes.
