Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stressed that extending the service of civil servants, including top judges, is not automatic and must adhere to Federal Constitution procedures. Speaking at the Prime Minister’s Department assembly, he noted surprise over criticism regarding retirements, saying extensions involve the commission, prime minister, Yang di-Pertuan Agong, and Conference of Rulers. Anwar warned against politicising institutions amid lobbying to extend or end specific tenures. Chief Justice Tengku Maimun retires July 1, while her expected successor Abang Iskandar retires a day later, and Nallini Pathmanathan in August. The Malaysian Bar has urged their extensions to protect judicial independence.
