Malaysia is witnessing a brain drain of nurses, with many leaving for higher salaries in Singapore and Saudi Arabia. Kedah-born nurse Devishree said she earns S$3,000 in Singapore compared to RM4,000 in Malaysia, enabling her to fund her sibling’s education. Another nurse, Ms Yap, cited better career progression abroad, while Ms V. Sita in Saudi Arabia bought a house within three years thanks to a tax-free salary of 8,000 riyals (S$2,700). In 2023 alone, 2,445 nurses applied to work overseas, with 36% from the public sector, highlighting ongoing concerns over Malaysia’s ability to retain healthcare talent.
