Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has criticised the government’s decision not to extend former Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat’s tenure, saying it shows a lack of regard for Malaysia’s legal future. He noted public concern over the judiciary’s independence following the decision. “Even government supporters wanted Tun Maimun to be given at least a six-month extension,” Hamzah said, questioning why Putrajaya ignored these calls. He suggested the move might have been intentional, adding: “That is what we are questioning.” Tengku Maimun’s term ended Wednesday after six years in office.
