Malaysians are crying happy tears – over onions! Fama chairman Aminuddin Zulkipli revealed Malaysians munch nearly 750,000 tonnes of onions annually, as heavy as seven fully loaded aircraft carriers. In 2022 alone, Malaysia imported 687,000 tonnes, including 38,000 tonnes of shallots – that’s 1.2kg of shallots per person. Onion imports cost RM1 billion in 2023, soaring to RM1.5 billion in 2024, a 67% jump since 2020. Agriculture Minister Mohamad Sabu said producing 30% of shallots locally could save RM300 million. For now, Malaysians remain onion lovers – whether bawang besar, bawang kecil, or bawang putih – tears and all!.
