The Malaysian Bar will march in Kuala Lumpur on July 14 to demand freedom of the judiciary, amid growing concerns over delayed judicial appointments under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Former PM Mahathir Mohamad warned against external interference in judicial selections, highlighting the importance of the Judicial Appointments Commission. Analysts told The Straits Times that public confidence in judicial independence is at risk. Ms Ariel Tan of RSIS noted Anwar faces criticism for slow reforms and leniency towards allies, while SIIA’s Oh Ei Sun urged Anwar to explain the delays to end public confusion and prevent perceptions of judicial interference.
