Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu has urged Malaysian hotels to adopt durian-friendly policies to promote the nation’s culinary identity. Speaking at the World Durian Championship 2025, he encouraged hotels to allow guests to enjoy durians in regulated settings, highlighting it as a cultural celebration that attracts international tourists. He noted Europeans and Arabs may prefer durian-based products like ice cream. Mohamad Sabu also called for strategic partnerships between orchard owners, hotels, and tourism operators to elevate Malaysia’s global profile. Currently, many hotels prohibit durians due to their strong odour despite rising global demand for the fruit.
