Malaysia is considering nuclear power as a long-term option for its national energy mix, according to Deputy Prime Minister II Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Speaking at International Energy Week 2025 in Kuching, he clarified that no final decision has been made and that the proposal remains in the feasibility study stage.

Fadillah, who also leads the Ministry of Energy Transition, said Malaysia is benchmarking global nuclear practices and technologies. Implementation would require signing 18 international treaties and gaining public support. Even if approved, the entire process would take at least 10 years. Currently, the Philippines is the only Southeast Asian country with a nuclear plant.
