Youth group Mandiri condemned police investigations into student activist Alyaah Hani, who faces a Section 509 Penal Code probe for her role in the recent “Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0” anti-corruption protest. Coordinator Hamdin Nordin said the charge, which criminalises insulting gestures or words, is vague and politically motivated to intimidate students speaking against corruption. Alyaah, also Liga Mahasiswa Malaysia coordinator, will provide her statement tomorrow. Hamdin urged police to drop the “irrelevant” probe, stressing that criticising corruption is not an insult to modesty. The protest targeted Sabah’s mining scandal and ended with burning a caricature of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
