A 66-year-old woman in Shanghai, identified as Wang, has spent over two million yuan (US$280,000) on online shopping, buying mainly cosmetics, health supplements, and gold jewellery. She hoards unopened packages in her flat, creating unsanitary conditions with bad smells, flies, and cockroaches, prompting neighbour complaints. Wang, who lives alone, says shopping excites her and prevents relatives from borrowing money as they see her home cluttered. She even bought a second flat and uses her garage to store items. Despite past clean-ups, her hoarding continues. Psychiatrists link her behaviour to depression, social anxiety, and deep loneliness, sparking public concern for elderly mental health.
