Wan Ahmad Farid Emerges as Frontrunner for Chief Justice Post

Court of Appeal Judge Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh has been appointed Malaysia’s new Chief Justice, succeeding Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat who retired on July 2. His appointment received the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s assent after advice from the Prime Minister and consultation with the Conference of Rulers. Federal Court Judge Abu Bakar Jais becomes the new President of the Court of Appeal, while Judge Azizah Nawawi is appointed Chief Judge of the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak. Wan Farid, a former deputy home minister, is known as a fair judge with notable rulings including Teoh Beng Hock’s case and Loh Siew Hong’s children’s conversion case.
