KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has ruled that lawyer-activist Siti Kasim was unlawfully arrested and detained by Jawi officers during a 2016 transgender beauty pageant raid. Judge Su Tiang Joo said Siti proved her case on a balance of probabilities, finding no lawful grounds for her arrest as she was present as an assistant advocate. She was held from 10.30pm to 2.30am without basis. The court awarded her RM160,000 in general and aggravated damages plus RM100,000 in costs. Siti, acquitted in 2020 of obstructing an officer, said she suffered mental anguish and loss of freedom during her four-hour detention.
