The government also declined to cut fishing subsidies, fearing backlash from rural voters. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized Malaysia won’t compromise on core national policies, including ethnic affirmative action. Trade Minister Tengku Zafrul reiterated that any agreement must protect Malaysia’s long-term economic interests and sovereignty.
