During a White House visit, former US President Donald Trump praised Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as a “tough negotiator” while announcing that a major trade deal was nearly complete. 

Trump Hails Trade Deal with Marcos, But Slaps 19% Tariff on Philippine Goods

Despite calling it an “open market” agreement, Trump later said the US would still impose a 19% tariff on Philippine imports. The Philippines was among two dozen nations warned of tariffs starting August 1. 

Tensions over trade contrast with deepening US-Philippines defense ties amid South China Sea tensions. Marcos reaffirmed strong US-Philippine military cooperation, calling Washington the country’s most reliable ally. Trump also used the appearance to criticize past Democratic administrations.
