Malaysia’s 1MDB scandal cost the country an estimated $18 billion (RM82 billion), far exceeding the $4.5 billion initially identified as stolen. About $7.65 billion was directly siphoned from 1MDB funds, with fugitive financier Jho Low allegedly pocketing $2.5 billion. An additional $6 billion was lost through inflated Belt and Road infrastructure deals signed under former Prime Minister Najib Razak in 2016 to cover 1MDB’s debts. Including debt interest and bond liabilities, Malaysia’s total bill surpassed 1MDB’s own peak asset size. The indirect damage includes higher borrowing costs, weaker investor confidence, and derailed national development projects, with Jho Low still at large.
