GEORGE TOWN: Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia has criticised the government’s RM100 cash aid as a populist gimmick with minimal impact on living costs. Its deputy president, Oh Tong Keong, likened the aid to an “angpau Merdeka” that fails to ease the people’s burden. He questioned why the cash is given to the wealthy instead of targeted groups in need. Oh argued the aid amounts to just RM20 per month over five months, while people face rising taxes and utility charges. He also criticised the extra public holiday on September 15, saying it could hurt economic productivity.
