Amnesty International Malaysia has condemned the arrest of Bersatu leader Badrul Hisham Shaharin, or Chegubard, following the “Turun Anwar” rally on July 26. The group said the government’s actions contradict its stated commitment to freedom of expression. “You cannot claim to support freedom of expression while arresting peaceful protesters under colonial-era laws like the Sedition Act,” said Amnesty’s Kiran Kaur. She added, “Such contradictions not only erode public trust but also flout Malaysia’s constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of expression.” Badrul was arrested despite agreeing to meet police, prompting further criticism of state attempts to intimidate dissenting voices.
