PETALING JAYA: Former Klang MP Charles Santiago has called for the introduction of an Unexplained Wealth Order (UWO) to combat corruption and illicit wealth among Malaysia’s elite. He said the country lost RM277 billion to fraud and illicit flows from 2018 to 2023 — funds that could have improved schools, healthcare, and food aid. Citing the UK’s success with UWOs, Santiago urged Malaysia to adopt similar laws to compel individuals to justify assets disproportionate to their income. He warned that without legal reform, justice risks being politicised and limited to who holds power.
