Johnny Lim Makes History as MAF’s First Chinese Lt. Gen. But Retires Next Year

Lieutenant General Johnny Lim Eng Seng has become the first senior Chinese officer in the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) to attain the rank of lieutenant general. Defence Minister Khaled Nordin praised Lim for his decades of service, adding, “Thank you, general, and best wishes for your retirement.” Lim, who clarified he will retire in January 2026, said the promotion—though reported in June—was backdated due to procedural requirements. A Malacca native and Sandhurst graduate, he will serve 10 months in his historic role before stepping down after over 40 years of service. Some PAS elements criticised Madani for elevating a non-Malay to a high ranking position in the army.
