KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — Former minister Khairy Jamaluddin cautioned the government against over-policing political speech, warning it could trigger a “rude surprise” at the ballot box. Speaking at the Malaysian Student Leaders Summit, he urged authorities to engage with podcasters before introducing regulations on online media. Khairy, co-host of the Keluar Sekejap podcast, said heavy-handed laws risk stifling free speech and promoting self-censorship. He called for proportionate enforcement focused on incitement and threats to national institutions. Emphasising the value of unfiltered public discourse, Khairy noted his podcast self-regulates and avoids profanity to maintain credibility and respect audience expectations.
