KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — Yeoh Li Tian, 25, has become Malaysia’s first-ever chess Grandmaster after clinching his third norm and surpassing the 2500 FIDE rating at the GM-IM Invitational Chess Championship 2025. The prestigious Grandmaster (GM) title, awarded by FIDE, is a lifetime honour held by fewer than 2,000 players globally. Yeoh, from Petaling Jaya, began playing chess at age three and described the journey as filled with sacrifice and discipline. He expressed joy at achieving the milestone on home soil and may represent Malaysia at the upcoming SEA Games. The Malaysia Chess Federation hailed his success as historic.
