Malaysia Seeks Clarity on Potential 100% US Tariff on Semiconductors

Malaysia has sought clarification from the United States regarding a proposed 100% tariff on semiconductor chips manufactured in countries without US-based facilities. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the ministry has contacted the US Trade Representative and Department of Commerce to better understand the policy.

Although no official announcement has been made, the proposed tariff—reportedly mentioned by former US President Donald Trump—could have serious implications for Malaysia. In 2024, Malaysia exported RM60.6 billion in semiconductor products to the US. The government is preparing for potential impacts by engaging industry players and promoting export diversification.
