PETALING JAYA: Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli cautioned that reintroducing the goods and services tax (GST) would hit poorer households hardest and drive up inflation. Speaking on his “Yang Berhenti Menteri” podcast, the Pandan MP said GST is a regressive tax that would impose new costs of RM1,000–RM2,000 annually on families currently exempt from income tax. He warned of price hikes similar to 2015, noting that Malaysian prices rarely fall once increased. Rafizi urged the government to prioritise keeping inflation near 2% and implementing wage reforms before considering GST. Inflation stood at 1.1% in June 2025.
