An international crew of five astronauts began their return to Earth yesterday after nearly five months aboard the International Space Station (ISS). US astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Japan’s Takuya Onishi, and Russian cosmonaut Kirill Peskov are expected to splash down off California’s coast today after a 17-hour journey in SpaceX’s Dragon capsule. The mission, NASA’s 10th crew rotation under its Commercial Crew Program, included experiments on plant growth and cellular response to gravity. Their March launch also facilitated the return of two US astronauts stranded for nine months due to Boeing Starliner malfunctions. Recovery operations will follow splashdown.
