PAS-Run Preschools Accused of Exploiting “Volunteer” Teachers

During the 13th Malaysia Plan debate, Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad urged action against PAS-run Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam (PASTI) for paying teachers only RM600 monthly as “volunteers,” far below the national minimum wage, without EPF or SOCSO.

He said nearly 10,000 teachers at 2,497 centres face poor pay and lack social protection despite PASTI’s low-fee appeal. PAS MP Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman defended the arrangement, citing short working hours and extra allowances. 

Nik Nazmi welcomed plans for compulsory preschool at age five and called for streamlining facilities currently managed by three ministries to improve rural preschool access.
