A new Gallup survey reveals shifting attitudes toward alcohol in the United States, with a majority now viewing even moderate consumption as harmful to health. The poll found that only 54% of Americans drink alcohol, the lowest rate since Gallup began tracking in 1939. Among drinkers, consumption has dropped to an average of 2.8 drinks a week, the lowest since 1996. Concern over alcohol’s health effects has grown sharply, with 53% in 2025 considering moderate intake bad for health, compared to 27% in the early 2000s. Experts warn alcohol contributes to thousands of cancer cases annually.
