Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has cast doubt over the validity of Anwar Ibrahim’s royal pardon, despite approving it during his tenure. Speaking in Shah Alam, Mahathir said doubts surrounding the pardon should be decided in court, adding that if Anwar was found ineligible, he must step down as prime minister. His remarks come after former unity minister P Waythamoorthy filed a legal suit claiming Anwar’s pardon did not explicitly remove his disqualification under Article 48 of the Federal Constitution. The High Court will hear Mahathir’s separate RM150 million lawsuit against Anwar in October.
