Malaysia’s shipping industry has proven resilient, sustaining profitability and meeting rising global demand despite trade uncertainties, said Shipping Association Malaysia (SAM) chairman Ooi Lean Hin. He noted that industry profits from the past five years have been reinvested into infrastructure, capacity expansion, and green fuel technologies to meet global decarbonisation goals.
Ooi: Trade Disruptions Create New Openings for Southeast Asia
Speaking at the Gateway to Asia seminar in Petaling Jaya, Ooi said disruptions from tariffs, geopolitical tensions, and shifting supply chains create new opportunities for Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Hong Kong trade official Libera Cheng meanwhile urged Malaysian shipowners to register vessels in Hong Kong, offering tax incentives and connectivity.
