PETALING JAYA: Thousands of Malaysians are renouncing their citizenship for Singapore, with numbers hitting record highs in recent years. Home Minister Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail revealed that 6,060 Malaysians had surrendered their citizenship as of June 30 this year, following 16,930 cases in 2024 and 11,500 in 2023.
Economic opportunities
Experts say the move reflects long-term planning driven by concerns over economic opportunities, governance, and stability. Monash University Malaysia researcher Dr Koh Sin Yee said the trend should not be reduced to simple “push” and “pull” factors, as decisions often involve career, family, and security considerations.
Governance, and stability
Singapore’s economic strength, efficient governance, and cultural familiarity are major draws, noted regional analysts. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s Prof Dr Siti Aisyah Panatik stressed that such decisions are rarely impulsive, with many viewing citizenship as a tool for mobility.
Analysts warn Malaysia must improve fairness, governance, and job opportunities to stem the outflow.
