Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today the government will appeal the Court of Appeal’s decision to strike down parts of Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) that criminalised “offensive” and “annoying” online remarks.
Anwar Warns Freedom of Assembly Cannot Encroach Restricted Spaces
While respecting the ruling, he stressed that institutional reforms must be studied in tandem between the judiciary and executive. Speaking at the ASEAN Law Summit, Anwar cautioned that freedoms, such as the right to assembly, must not encroach on restricted venues like Istana Negara.
The Court of Appeal earlier ruled the provisions unconstitutional, following activist Heidy Quah’s successful constitutional challenge.
