Seven PKR MPs today urged postponement of the Urban Renewal Bill’s second reading, citing concerns over the proposed consent threshold for redevelopment projects. Subang MP Wong Chen argued the threshold was too low compared to Hong Kong and Singapore, suggesting instead 85% for buildings over 30 years and 90% for newer ones to protect tenants, especially in social housing.

He also urged social impact studies and greater committee consultation. Surprisingly, Opposition MPs including Hamzah Zainudin supported the call, with PAS’ Takiyuddin Hassan saying the bill contradicted existing laws like the Land Acquisition Act. The bill had its first reading today.
