Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail will appeal the Alor Setar High Court’s ruling ordering him to pay RM670,000 in damages and costs to Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor over defamatory remarks.

The Alor Setar High Court today ruled that Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had defamed Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor. Justice John Lee Kien How ordered Saifuddin to pay RM600,000 in general damages and RM70,000 in costs.

Saifuddin Appeal

The court found Saifuddin’s remarks, including the word “thief” and allegations of financial mismanagement involving Marris funds, defamatory. Saifuddin must also publish an apology in both Malay and English newspapers within 14 days, subject to Sanusi’s approval.

An injunction was issued preventing Saifuddin or his representatives from repeating the allegations concerning REE theft or Marris mismanagement.
