JAKARTA — President Prabowo Subianto has dismissed Deputy Manpower Minister Immanuel Ebenezer after he was named a suspect in an extortion case, marking the first corruption scandal to hit the new Cabinet. Indonesia’s anti-graft agency (KPK) accused Ebenezer of extorting companies seeking workplace safety certificates, allegedly pocketing three billion rupiah (S$238,000) in kickbacks. He was arrested with several others in a sting operation on Aug 20 and will be detained for 20 days. Ebenezer denied wrongdoing and appealed for clemency. The case tests Prabowo’s anti-corruption pledge, as Ebenezer is a Gerindra party member and longtime supporter.
