PETALING JAYA: Political analysts have urged DAP to actively perform its check-and-balance role to avoid being likened to MCA, which was long criticised for deferring to Umno during its time in government. Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Sivamurugan Pandian said to FMT DAP must prioritise national issues like education, healthcare and urban development to shed its image as a race-based party. James Chin of the University of Tasmania noted that unlike MCA, DAP is the largest party in the unity government but must balance lobbying behind the scenes to avoid backlash. Analysts agreed DAP’s independence distinguishes it from MCA’s reliance on Umno.
