KUCHING: A six-year-old Indonesian girl has died of rabies in Bintulu, Sarawak, after being bitten by a stray dog on July 16. Sarawak Health Director Dr Veronica Lugah confirmed the child developed symptoms, including fever, headache, neck pain, and loss of appetite, before being admitted to Bintulu Hospital on August 3. She later suffered hallucinations, hydrophobia, aerophobia, and excessive salivation, and died the following day. Tests confirmed the dog was rabies-positive. Since 2017, Sarawak has recorded 85 human rabies cases with 78 deaths. Authorities urge public vigilance, vaccination of pets, and immediate treatment after animal bites or scratches.
